I view this work as the direct manifestation of the texture of moments. These moments materialize through the interplay of intuitive and logical actions.
Personal Mythologies built by the legends we are told about ourselves are contributing factors in whom we become and the roles that we assume in society. He is the smart one. She is the pretty one or the funny one.

In this series of work I explore these factors by addressing characteristics that I see in others and myself. I build totems in homage to the strength of honorable traits and as a way to confront the fear of falling to insecurity. In this effort, I reference personal histories both fact and fabricated.

I use reclaimed and recycled materials as a collage element to build up the surface of my paintings and sculptures in an effort to visually represent the history of my subject. At the same time these reclaimed objects carry their own history into the work. The building up of the surface in this way unifies subject and surface. The object is often treated as a figure would be and the personality of a time and place is conveyed while a sense of place is established.

A sense of place is so much more than an awareness of the physical environment and an acceptance of the past, present, and future. A sense of place is a bond of one’s self and ones conscious to all of the tangible and intangible aspects of our environment.
